Bourdin often used a lot of white space around his pictures both in French Vogue and in his work for Charles Jourdan. He controlled the layout of his photographs and would often a put a landscape format picture on one page while most magazines would spread it over a double page. Maybe he did not want to lose portions of his images in the gutter of the magazine.
